Professional Training Externship in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

Sue Johnson, PhD, is Director of the Ottawa (Canada) Couple and Family Institute and the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy as well as Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa and Research Professor at Alliant University in San Diego, California. Dr. Johnson's best known professional books include The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection (2004), Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy with Trauma Survivors (2002) and Hold Me Tight (2008).

Through a combination of lecture, videotape, observation of live interviews and exercises, participants will learn the basic concepts and theory of emotionally focused therapy, identify the stages and steps of treatment; begin to formulate problematic cycles of interaction and help couples end cycles of blame and disengagement so that they can restore and deepen the emotional bond between them.


The four-day externship includes:

  • Observations of live interviews Presentations of theory and clinical techniques
  • Skill training exercises
  • Supervision in specific cases
  • The EFT Externship is approved by the APA, the CPA and is taught by AAMFT Approved Supervisors.
