Sonali Nanayakkara, MD, ABIHM, is the Director of Psychiatric Services at The Family Institute. Board-certified in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry, she believes in an integrative approach to the promotion of mental wellness in children, adolescents and families while also addressing treatment of a wide range of emotional and behavioral concerns.

Her interests include collaboration with families and schools; multidisciplinary care systems; integrative medicine; mood and anxiety disorders; attentional and behavioral disorders; suicide prevention and lifelong education.

She completed her medical degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and residency training in general adult psychiatry at Northwestern University. Dr. Nanayakkara continued on to specialize in child and adolescent psychiatry through a fellowship at UIC where she served as co-chief fellow. Following this, she joined the faculty and was appointed medical director of the UIC Pediatric Mood Disorders Clinic and directly supervised the training of child psychiatry fellows and medical students. In addition to clinical care, she focused on medical education and leadership, eventually serving as the associate training director as well as the interim training director of child and adolescent psychiatry. She has extensive experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to address the needs of her patients. In November of 2013, Dr. Nanayakkara became a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine.
