April is Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month, and we recognize the pervasive impact that it can have on individuals, couples and families. From everyday challenges to significant life transitions, stress can manifest in various forms and ultimately affect our mental, emotional, and physical health.

In-Person Therapy Available September 7

Illinois entered Phase 5 of its reopening plan several weeks ago, though The Family Institute remains a 100% teletherapy practice at this time with in-person neuropsychological testing being determined on a case-by-case basis. We are working to fully open our offices to our clients for in-person therapy starting September 7.

Announcing a New Video Collection

We’re excited to unveil our one-of-a-kind video collection: Talking to Kids You Love. This breakthrough project of 16 short videos offers wise approaches to anyone who interacts with children — parents, caregivers, teachers, and more. Each video depicts an adult lovingly responding to a tough parent-child encounter, moments that often lead to power struggles and leave parents wondering if they’ve said the right thing.

Continued Teletherapy

In March 2020, The Family Institute quickly moved from a 2% teletherapy practice to a 100% teletherapy practice, necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We were fortunate that technology enabled us to be able to continue caring for the mental health and wellbeing of our community with very little interruption.

Family Process Special Issue: Black Lives Matter

The December 2020 issue of Family Process, an international, multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal edited by Jay L. Lebow, included a special section on Black Lives Matter. Anthony L. The Neuroeducation Toolbox Published

Cognella Academic Publishing recently published The Neuroeducation Toolbox: Practical Translations of Neuroscience in Counseling and Psychotherapy co-authored by Raissa Miller and Eric T. Beeson. This text book is an excellent resource and provides a practical set of tools for integrating neuroscience into clinical practice.

Federal Grant Awarded for Domestic Violence Intervention Research

The Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women awarded a three-year, $450,000 grant to The Family Institute at Northwestern University to support Dr. Erika Lawrence’s Violence Intervention Project research.
