Pride Month is an important time of celebration, visibility, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. This month we recognize that the journey to self-acceptance, self-expression, and living authentically can be challenging, which can result in increased vulnerability to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress. According to The Trevor Project's 2023 survey, 54% of LGBTQ+ young people reported experiencing symptoms of depression, and according to Mental Health America, nearly 39% of all the LGBTQ+ community reported experiencing mental illness in the past year.
At The Family Institute at Northwestern University, we strive to promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and create spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals feel safe, seen, and supported. If you or someone you know is dealing with mental health struggles and is in need of support, please call us at 847-733-4300 or request an appointment.
